Notes

Note

Soon after their marriage, John Goodspeed shipped as a carpenter on a privateer during the French and Indian War. They captured a Spanish vessel loaded with Spanish silver dollars and bullion which was declared fair game because it had been trading with the French. John Goodspeed’s share of the booty was said to have been $5,000 in silver. He was a frugal, cautious and successful businessman. Called "Silver John Goodspeed," he loaned money to the public at high rates of interest payable in Spanish milled dollars.
