In early 1778, with the rise in the capture of British vessels by American Privateers, granted authority by state governments, British Lord Germain recommended General Clinton direct an attack by sea on ports supporting the rebel privateers. The towns of Buzzard’s Bay were known for their privateering accomplishments and were selected for attack by the British. September 5, 1778, a British fleet of 39 vessels with 4,000 troops landed at Clark’s Point of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, with orders to destroy vessels, wharves, and warehouses that supported the privateers. In response, militia Brigadier General Joseph Otis called an alarm at Dartmouth, Bedford, and Falmouth to defend the seacoast. The payroll due to Captain Micah Hamlen’s company, Colonel Freeman’s regiment on “the alarm at Bedford, Dartmouth, and Falmouth” in September 1778 lists 33 men, including Private Job Howland, service of ten days.4

On 2 November 1778, the British man of war Somerset was driven ashore at the northern tip of Cape Cod by a nor’easter, with the captain surrendering his crew of 400 to local authorities. Marching from Truro to Boston, the crew of the “Somerset” were guarded by the local militia companies as they passed from town to town. The payroll of Captain Micah Hamlen’s company of “Metross,” in Colonel Freeman’s regiment, “guarding the prisoners belonging to the “Somerset,” shows 24 men, including Private Job Howland, with service of three days.5

Spring of 1779 brought new threat of British attack at Falmouth, prompting alarms in March, April, May, and September at Falmouth. The payrolls of Captain Micah Hamlen’s company of “Matrosse” list 35 to 40 men and include Sergeant Job Howland, with service totaling six days.6

Mrs. Hannah (Jenkins) Howland, in the “48th year of her age”, died on 21 September 1781 at Barnstable. Job Howland married second to Mrs. Huldah (Smith) Hathaway on 17 February 1785 at Barnstable. Patriot Howland died on 1 May 1794 at Barnstable and was buried beside his wife, Hannah, at the West Barnstable cemetery.
